This week’s top 5 wednesday topic is “Characters you defend”, so characters that everyone seems to hate but you love.

5. Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins)

We can all agree that Katniss did some (or a lot of) things that could’ve killed her, but she always did what she believed to be the right thing. She’s so strong and selfless, and the Hunger Games holds a special place in my heart, so I will defend Katniss Everdeen.

4. Simon Lewis (The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare)

Simon by rararachelmarie

Simon is not the most hated character out there but he still gets negative comments from readers, which I don’t understand at all. I get that he’s the “other guy” in the “love triangle” and everyone obviously prefers Jace to Simon as Clary’slove interest, but that honestly wasn’t even a real love triangle, it was always clear that Clary only has romantic feelings for Jace. That’s a stupid reason to dislike a character, especially someone as funny and loyal as Simon. The series wouldn’t be the same without him and his humor and pop culture references.

3. Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)

I have not yet read the books from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, so I can only speak for the show, but Dany is someone who I will always protect. I haven’t seen much Daenerys hate online, but my friends in real life who watch Game of Thrones all seem to dislike or hate her. Sure, she did get a bunch of people killed, but those were the ones who were wrong and did horrible things. She’s another character who fights for what she believes in, which by the way she has to do on her own because her whole family is dead, and even though I sometimes disagree with her decisions, compared to all the other messed up characters she’s still the one I love the most and I will defend her from all negative comments.

2. Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling)

Yes, Draco was a bully and did some bad things. But let’s be real, who wouldn’t when put under such pressure from their family for years? Draco is one of my favorite Harry Potter characters. He’s so complex and interesting and he did regret what he did, and his actions weren’t even half as bad as those from other beloved characters, so please, stop with all the hating on him.

1. Alison DiLaurentis (Pretty Little Liars)

I’m only talking about tv show Ali, because the Alison from the Pretty Little Liars books by Sara Shepard did some messed up things that I don’t agree with at all and I can’t defend that character, so let’s only concentrate on the (totally different) tv version of her.

Alison Lauren DiLaurentis has to be one of my all time favorite television characters. As with Draco, she was a bully when she was 14 and the things she said and her manipulating people was of course wrong, but she changed so much since then and had to go through horrible, traumatic things, and people still hate on her so much. She had to run away from home and make her friends and family believe she was dead for years because she was being blackmailed and threatend and stalked, her family had so many secrets and even hid a sibling from her, she went to prison for a murder she didn’t commit, and those are just a few of the things that happened to Ali and some fans of the show still think that’s not enough because she bullied other kids from school years ago. I am and will forever be part of the Alison DiLaurentis defence squad, because my precious baby deserves happiness and love.

That’s it for this week’s t5w! What are some of your favorite characters that other people hate? Let me know in the comments!

love, marina
